By Jim Snyder - The Hellbender series of hard-chined squirt boats is designed to maximize fun on waves and in holes while retaining the smooth cartwheel and screw ability that squirt boats are renowned for. They will deliver decent mystery performance, though not on a par with longer, rounder hulls lik e the Bigfoot or Shred.
Designed around a 28 or less inseam, the Fish is a flatwater experts dream. The short length and super low volume allow it to trade ends with lightning speed, and the vertical sidewall in the cockpit area make it stable during the critical juncture between bow and stern ends. This same quality lends itself to effortless clean and superclean cartwheels. Though the flat bottom and hard chines make it a dynamic surfing and spinning boat, the design retains just enough of a curve in the hull to allow for graceful past-vertical moves like screws and washouts. The Fish is an excellent competition boat for smaller paddlers, having taken the Silver and Bronze medals (Mens and Womens squirt classes, respectively) at the World Freestyle Championships in 2001, and Gold at the PreWorlds in 2002 (Womens Squirt).
HELLBENDER
The Hellbender is a hard-chined squirt boat designed for paddlers with a 28-32 inseam. At 8 in length, the boat is a quick and nimble river-runner that can carve up waves and shred holes with abandon. The signature hard chines and fairly flat hull make it responsive and fast in heavy whitewater, while low volume allows quick mushes on the fly into seams and boils. This well-rounded design can make the entire river an amusement park; holes, waves, eddylines, boils, seams and rock pillows, theres no river feature that a Hellbender cant turn into a playspot. The boat is not bad for mysteries
it will sink willingly, but the hard chines require you to stay on top of the boat at all times to keep it level and spinning. This is an excellent competition design as well, having taken the Silver and Bronze medals at the 2002 PreWorld Freestyle Championships (Mens Squirt and Womens Squirt, respectively) and Silver at the 2002 US National Championships (Mens Squirt).
UNDERDAWG
A Hellbender for bigger boys and girls! This long-inseam version of the popular hard-chined design series is built around a paddler with a 32-37 inseam. It is a fast, responsive boat that possesses the same excellent surfing and hole playing characteristics of its shorter siblings (the Hellbender and Fish) while delivering greater mystery-move ability due to its added length. At 85 it will catch waves that even most surface playboats cant get onto, and the hard chines that are a characteristic of this design series let it carve like a demon and flatspin well. As an all-river play machine, this boat has no equal in this inseam range no other squirt boat offers as much all-round fun for the longer-legged paddler.![]() |
