History
In 2003, Randy Philliips and I designed the Intruder, a radically different
production surf kayak that was built on the ‘surf like a wave ski’ premise.
Modeled from a waveski, the Intruder was born. At 8’2”, the surf kayak
performed more like a waveski than any other production surf kayak, very
maneuverable. A great surf kayak, but it had inherent problems. Not enough
tail volume, too much rocker and the bottom rails were—although functional—not quite right.
Present
After the 2005 Worlds in Costa Rica I wanted to redesign the model and
evolve it. This meant taking the design down to 7’8”, flattening out the
bottom, reducing the tail rocker, and adding adequate tail volume for the
design to function how we initially intended it to in 2003.
So, the Twist was created.
With the Twist you will get a surf kayak that is very fast and very
‘waveski-like’. The bottom is very basic, flat, with very minimal chine,
with just a touch of V at rear. The rails are like nothing else I have
ever done before. Sharp from hip back. Very attacking type of surf kayak
that carves very predictably and smooth. The deck is a very basic,
efficient water shedding type that will not load up on aggressive turns.
The Twist is a very user-friendly surf kayak that will challenge you to
push to new surf kayak heights. Weight ranges accommodated are from
100-200 pounds. This design caters to the intermediate to expert athlete
who likes barrels and craves air.
